About the research project

Contracts for the international carriage of goods by sea are primarily governed by international conventions. Most of the countries adopted the Hague-Visby regime, which is essentially based upon the Hague Rules or known as the 'International Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules of Law relating to Bills of Lading' (Brussels, 25th August 1924). The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the Hague Rules. The problem is these international conventions were all drafted decades ago where no one could envisage the invention of autonomous ships. The trial run of the 'Yara Birkland" in Norway in 2021 raised awareness of the international community that autonomous ships are becoming a reality. At the same time, autonomous ships point to the fact that existing international conventions pertaining to international carriage of goods by sea are coming of age but yet there is no alternative international legal regime suitable for the use of autonomous ships in place. The aim of this research is to construct such a suitable international regime.
